The old adage that they “don’t make them like they used to” certainly applies to household appliances. These days, it’s not unheard of to have to replace appliances every few years. But what do you do with the old ones? Don’t simply throw away your used appliances in Montreal. Instead, donate them!
In virtually every community, there are people in need of some of the things many of us take for granted. Local charities are always looking for used appliances, including fridges, stoves, microwaves, toasters, washers and dryers, dishwashers and more. What is no longer good to you can likely be fixed up and given new life through a charitable organization. Even if your appliances is older or needs a part or two, some organizations will still take the donation and fix it up so that it can be used.
Finding a place to donate your appliance may require a bit of research. However, a quick internet search and a phone call or two should garner good results. Good places to start are local churches or city hall, as well as organizations such as The Salvation Army or Goodwill. In most cases, these charities will even come get the appliances from you, saving you the trouble of having to dispose of them yourself.
Appliances may not be the first thing you think of when it comes to making a donation to a charity, but the truth is these types of things can make a powerful impact in the community. Consider a soup kitchen who regularly feeds hundreds or even thousands of people. Imagine the difference an extra stove, dishwasher or microwave could make to that operation. Or a women’s shelter who needs to provide laundry facilities to many women and their children every day. A new-to-them washer and dryer can really make a big difference there, too.
In some cases, the organization will fix up the appliance and resell it, putting the money raised back into their organization. Or, they might donate it to a family in need. Since you were going to get rid of the appliance anyway, why not consider doing a good thing by donating it instead?
Donating your used appliances is also an environmentally responsible thing to do. Instead of letting your used stove end up in a landfill, leaching chemicals into the groundwater and soil, let your used appliances keep doing good for others after their use in your home is no longer needed.
Finally, there’s a practical reason to donate your gently used appliances. In some areas, you can claim your donation as a deduction on your taxes, affording you a tax benefit. This isn’t the case in every state/province/country, so check with your local government to find out first. If you do intend to claim your donation on your taxes, ask for a receipt so you can submit it at tax time.
The next time you decide to replace a household appliance with a new one, consider donating your old ones instead of throwing them away. You never know whose lives you could be changing in a profound way just through this simple act.
